The anatomy of a life-story book: what makes one worth keeping

Most people have more than enough material for a book about someone they love. What they lack is a shape. Left to a flat list, even wonderful memories flatten into a scrapbook. Give them a structure, and they become a book worth keeping.

That structure is what the Vivlore life-story template provides, and it is simpler than you might think.

Chapters are decades

A life divides naturally into decades, so that is where the template starts. Give it a name and a date of birth, and it lays out a chapter for each decade of the person's life. You fill each one with the memories that belong there. Empty decades simply fall away.

A chapter is five beats

Within a chapter, the template follows a five-beat rhythm: an opening moment that hooks you, a couple of memories that set the scene and deliver the decade's defining event, a single quote that distils it all, and a quieter closing beat that points forward. It is a tiny three-act story, repeated once per decade.

The rule that makes it sing: alternate whose voice is telling each memory, and never run more than two or three pages of unbroken text before a photo or a quote gives the reader a rest.

How full is full?

This is the question people actually worry about. The answer is a range, not a target. Three chapters of three memories makes a lovely snapshot of around forty pages. Five chapters of five makes the canonical full book, around seventy. Six to eight richer chapters make a definitive family record. Past six memories in a single chapter, the chapter loses its shape, so that is the natural ceiling.

You do not have to decide up front. Start with one strong chapter and grow it.
